FinnCham Brazil at the LAAD Defense and Security trade fair 2023

LAAD, the largest and most important defence and security trade fair and exhibition in Latin America is held on 11–14 April, 2023 in Rio de Janeiro. The event is held every two years and it brings together key stakeholders from the defence industry.

According to Ambassador Johanna Karanko, Brazil and Finland have been increasingly collaborating in the aerospace, defense, security and space industry, and new synergies and avenues for bilateral cooperation have been identified over the last days.  

“Finland is keen to collaborate with both the Brazilian Armed Forces and Defense Industrial Base (BID)”, says Honorary Consul General Sergio Chamone. “We have a world-class defense cluster in Finland whose members are looking for international partners”.

Our business delegation, led by Permanent Secretary Esa Pulkkinen (Ministry of Defense), has had busy days at LAAD Defense and Security, a major trade fair in Brazil. Meetings included, among others, the three branches of the Brazilian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force).

Esa alongside our delegation, visited ICEYE’s booth at the same trade fair. During the event, Finnish company’s Vice President, Latin America, Ana Paula C. announced the firm’s MoU with Brazil’s Orbital Engenharia. 

Foreign firms operating in the defence industry often pick Brazil as their gateway into Latin America, says Business Finland‘s Senior Director, Heidi Virta. “Recent success cases such as ICEYE show that Brazil is a natural regional hub when it comes to defence-related segments”.
